Myofascial Release is a form of soft tissue therapy used to treat pains, to increase range of motion, relax contracted muscles, increase circulation and aid lymphatic drainage. The soft tissue (fascia) can become restrictive and irritated due to overused muscles, from physical trauma, and muscles that are tense causing local inflammation if not treated. The fascia is like a very densely woven spider web covering every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein, as well as all of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord.

It is thought that an extremely high percentage of people suffering with pain and/or lack of motion may be having fascial problems, but most go undiagnosed. Self Myofascial Release (SMR) is a form of self massage and is an important and often overlooked part of any training programme.

A foam roller, medicine ball, tennis/golf ball can be used to facilitate this process.
